Register Your Eviction Notice With the City
Some cities make landlords file a copy of the eviction notice, and sometimes the court papers, with a city agency within a few days of serving the tenant. Missing the deadline can give the tenant a defense. Find your city below and use its button to file.
- These rules come from city and county ordinances, on top of state law. They usually apply to units covered by the local rent or just cause ordinance.
- Deadlines are short, often 3 to 5 days after service. Filing the same day you serve is the safest habit.
- Keep the confirmation or a copy of what you sent with your proof of service.
- We checked these rules in October 2026. Cities change them, so confirm the current rule with the city.

Riverside County and San Bernardino County
We did not find any city in Riverside or San Bernardino County, or either county's unincorporated areas, that requires landlords to file eviction notices or court papers with the city. Two local rules to know:
- Palm Springs: owners must keep units registered in the city's Rent Registry and update it within 30 days when a tenancy ends, the rent changes or the property is sold. Open the Palm Springs Rent Registry (questions: rentregistry@palmspringsca.gov, (760) 323-8232).
- Perris: a local just cause eviction ordinance was reported adopted in January 2026. Confirm its current text with the City Clerk before serving a notice.
We did not find a filing requirement in other cities we serve, including Glendale, Long Beach, Burbank, Alhambra and South Pasadena, but local rules change. If your city is not listed, check with the city's housing department.
