Where to File an Eviction in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties
An eviction lawsuit (unlawful detainer) is filed in the Superior Court of the county where the rental property is. Orange County hears all of its eviction cases in one courthouse. Los Angeles County uses a list of eviction courthouses, and the right one depends on the property's ZIP code. Riverside assigns eviction cases by ZIP code, and San Bernardino by district.
- Orange County: unlawful detainer cases are heard at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana, wherever the property is in the county.
- Los Angeles County: every limited unlawful detainer case must be filed in one of the courthouses listed in the court's ZIP code table (Local Rule 2.3 and Appendix 2.D). Look up the property's ZIP code with the court's Filing Court Locator.
- Riverside County: five courthouses take eviction cases, assigned by the property's ZIP code. A local Certificate of Counsel (RI-CI032) must be filed with the complaint.
- San Bernardino County: limited eviction cases are filed in the district where the property is (Fontana, Barstow, Joshua Tree or Needles), with the local Certificate of Assignment (13-16503-360).
- E-filing: attorneys must e-file in Orange, Los Angeles and Riverside. In San Bernardino, e-filing of eviction cases is voluntary. Landlords who represent themselves may e-file but are not required to.
Orange County Superior Court
Central Justice Center
700 Civic Center Drive West
Santa Ana, CA 92701
Civil Division, 1st floor, Room K-100 (in person filing for self-represented parties). Clerk's office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The court's designation list states that unlawful detainer (landlord and tenant) cases are heard and tried at the Central Justice Center, and its limited and unlimited civil venue table points every Orange County city to the Central Justice Center for limited civil cases (claims of $35,000 and under). Eviction hearings and trials are held in the unlawful detainer departments there (Departments C61 and C66 as of October 2026). Trials are in person; some non-evidentiary hearings can be attended by Zoom.
Filing: the court's unlawful detainer information sheet says unlawful detainer filings shall be submitted by e-filing through an approved e-filing service provider. Self-represented litigants may file in person, electronically or by mail.

Los Angeles Superior Court
Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3 requires every limited unlawful detainer case (the usual residential eviction) to be filed in one of the courthouses listed in Appendix 2.D, the "Zip Code Table for Limited Unlawful Detainer." The table assigns each ZIP code, and in some ZIP codes each community or street boundary, to one of the eviction courthouses below. A ZIP code does not always go to the nearest courthouse: for example, the table sends Pomona's 91766 to West Covina and North Long Beach's 90805 to Norwalk. Always check the property's ZIP code before you file.
Find the right courthouse by ZIP code
- Find the property's ZIP code and community name (the U.S. Postal Service ZIP code, as the rule requires).
- Open the court's Filing Court Locator and search by the ZIP code and city or community. Choose the limited civil (unlawful detainer) result.
- Confirm it in the court's Appendix 2.D ZIP code table for limited unlawful detainer (PDF). If the ZIP code is split, use the line that matches the property's community or street.
The court notes that results for parts of the San Fernando Valley, East Los Angeles and the North Central District can differ, and suggests checking with the clerk's office for those areas. The rules are on the court's Local Rules page (Chapter 2).

Filing in Los Angeles: the court's general order on mandatory electronic filing requires litigants represented by attorneys to e-file documents in limited civil cases, which include unlawful detainers. Self-represented parties are exempt from mandatory e-filing under California Rules of Court, rule 2.253(b)(2), so a landlord without an attorney may still file at the clerk's window. Los Angeles filings also include the court's mandatory Civil Case Cover Sheet Addendum and Statement of Location (LACIV 109), where you state why the case belongs in that courthouse.
Larger cases: an unlawful detainer that seeks more than $35,000 is an unlimited civil case. The eviction ZIP code table covers limited cases only, so ask us where an unlimited case belongs before filing it.
